Is the BETA tag necessary?
September 10th, 2006
Many people, myself included, get too caught up in trends at some point or another. Whenever I am designing, I try and check myself and make sure that I am not falling into any short-term trend traps. I am learning that there is a very fine line between a design that is current, yet timeless and a design that is a knock-off of an already washed-up trend.
In the web world, the “beta” trend, or more specifically the usage of the “beta” tag on a web application logo (see my post on web 2.0 logos) started somewhere and seems to be nearing its end now (or at least it should be according to the web app team Webreakstuff). They bring up some good points in their post about why developers should stop marketing their applications as “beta” (or stop releasing them if they really are not ready).
Stop using the “beta” label.
